What to read and what to skip in 2026

The Final Book Count 39/20

Pages Read: 12,204

Average Book Length: 329 Pages

I am extremely proud of my list of books read this year. After setting my goal way lower than usual, anticipating being busy with wedding planning, I greatly exceeded it. AND to my own surprise everything except my last few books were new to me. I am typically a big rereader and this year I just kept putting books on hold at the library.

While I didn’t get to all the books I’d hoped for towards the end of the year, I’m ready to start 2026 with them.

If you are looking for books to add to your list for 2026 look no further.

Here’s a look at the best and worst of my 2025 reads.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

There were a few books that were vying for this coveted top stop, but Project Hail Mary was chosen because it was the book I had the hardest time putting down.

This was a book gifted to me, I’d seen a lot of good reviews but for me, it fell flat. Not enough world building when the book was dying to be expanded on all the magic elements, and I didn’t like any of the characters. So disappointing.

Sandover Beach Memories by Emma St. Clair

I struuuuuggled to get through this one, but because I didn’t have anymore Hawaii reading material I made myself finish by the pool.

The Lost Girls of Ireland by Susanna O’Leary

I’m not a “Did Not Finish” type of reader but this book was so bad that when I noticed I still had over half the book left to go, I just couldn’t do it anymore. The writing was horrific. I don’t know how it has 4/5 stars on Goodreads, what am I missing??

Fiction: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

This was one of those books reaching for the top spot, but there were a few things I wasn’t happy about in this book that pushed it below number one.

Mystery: Crooked House by Agatha Christie

This might be my top favorite Agatha Christie novel so far.

Fantasy: Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

Nonfiction: Courtship of the Saints by Patrick O’Hearn

SciFi: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

Books to Look Forward to in 2026:

My mom got me a cute “Lexi’s To Read” Basket for Christmas and I’m thrilled to fill it with a ton of books to read. I received a few Christmas gifts that are already in the basket, and a few that are being dragged along into the New Year from the ‘still haven’t read’ list. Here are some of the books I’m adding to my “To Be Read in 2026” List.

The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

The Great Divorce by C. S Lewis

The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo

The Book of  a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale

The Diary of St. Faustina by St. Maria Faustyna Kowalska
